The Weather Network predicts that Ontario’s summer is going to be hot, humid, and stormy.
On the days it’s not storming it’s going to be sweaty, and getting out on the water is a great way to cool down. What better way to enjoy Ontario’s many bodies of water than a water jet ski?
If you’re ready for the most fun you’ve ever had out on the lake, then jet skis are what you’re looking for. But if you’re not sure where to start, read these tips on how to pick the right water jet ski for you.
Set a Budget
A jet ski is an excellent addition to your watersport toys collection if you’ve already got one. If you don’t, jet skis are an affordable alternative to boats that are just as much (if not more) fun.
But more affordable certainly doesn’t mean cheap. Jet ski water sports vehicles aren’t an everyday purchase and they’ll require you to start saving up if you don’t have a few thousand dollars just laying around.
New or Pre-Owned Jet Skis?
A huge determinant of price is whether you purchase new or pre-owned. Of course, a new jet ski is going to cost you a bit more than a pre-owned one, just the same as it works with cars.
You can get a top-of-the-line, pre-owned jet ski for a great deal if you have the time and patience to look. But keep in mind that if you’re buying pre-owned, you’re going to want a full work-up on what that jet ski has been through.
If you’re set on a new model but don’t have the cash, consider financing. We finance all sorts of Powersports vehicles.
Know Your Water Jet Ski Types
There are four main types of water jet skis. These are rec-light, recreation, luxury/touring, and performance.
Rec-light has the least features and power, not even enough to tow a tube or boarder. However, these are the most affordable water jet ski types and they can carry up to two adults comfortably.
Recreation models are larger and more powerful than rec-light models, and they come with more features. These can typically reach top speeds of 80 to 95 KMPH.
Luxury/touring water jet skis can be as much as 11 feet long. They have powerful engines and luxurious features. They offer the most stable and comfortable riding conditions.
A performance water jet ski is designed for competition. Not made for beginners, these are for the experienced jet skier who wants to approach speeds of over 100 KMPH.
Pick Your Jet Ski Features
Other than the rec-light models, most jet skis come with a range of features. Some of these features include:
- electronic trim
- electronic reverse control
- speed control option
- performance options (i.e. fuel-saving mode)
- security systems
- audio systems
- touch screen displays
Besides these features, you’ll also have to decide how many people you want to carry on your jet ski. Be sure to remember that if you’re towing tubes or wakeboarders, you need a three-person jet ski by law.
